Great Places In Malmö region For Photography

This blog post will introduce you to the south western region of Skåne where over the years I've managed to find some great photography locations. They are all in a radius of maximum 60 kilometers from Malmö, meaning you could reach them within 1 hour of driving. For content about best paces in eastern Skåne klick here

I hope this will inspire you to go out and explore !!

Glumslöv backar and Hilleshögs dalar

Latitud: 55.929901 | Longitud: 12.817864

People who think that entire Skåne is flat have certainly not been here. Small hills with dotted trees and a beautiful view towards Denmark and the island of Ven. Plenty of lonely trees to photograph (yes I am big fan of those ), seascapes and during the summer plenty of cows adding that extra element to your landscape photography.

You should try visiting in May when the canola fields bloom. Of course it's beautiful all year round as well. The boat trip itself from Landskrona is worth the visit in itself. It's easy to walk around the island or you could rent a bike at Ven harbor. A great way to explore. A given place for photography is a kyrkbacken located at western part of Ven. The church here is located on top of a hill overlooking Öresund towards Denmark.  A very suitable location for panoramas.

Lomma / Bjärred

Latitud: 55.673138 | Longitud: 13.067405

Latitud: 55.717315 | Longitud: 13.02898

These two small towns are so closely interlinked that it could be hard for an outsider to tell them apart. Both have a harbor and well visited beaches during the summer. There are also numerous smaller and larger piers for us photographers to take advantage off.

Ljunghusen

Latitud: 55.405383 | Longitud: 12.919958

Latitud: 55.4237 | Longitud: 12.953308

A nice mix of beach huts, sandy beaches and piers makes this place a given option for seascape photography. I especially enjoy coming here during the winter as the southern location makes it possible for both sunrise and sunset photography during the same day. Ljunghusen also has a nice stretch of pine forest, which you can incorporate in your photography.

While visiting make sure you stop by the Höllviken small boat harbor where you can create nice photos by including their boat colony. Both Höllviken and Ljunghusen are connected with each other, but just follow the GPS coordinates if you're having problems finding the places.

Falsterbo / Skanör / Måkläppen

Latitud: 55.410074 | Longitud: 12.852037
Latitud: 55.366156 | Longitud: 12.810405

These places are similar to Ljunghusen described above. It's another place for great beach photography with a couple of piers to add to your composition.

However from 1st of November until the 28th of February you have the chance of experiencing great wildlife. Måkläppen nature reserve, part of Skanör, hosts a large seal colony. Off limit and protected for most of the year it allows visitors for 3 months a year. From the parking lot at Skanor golf club you have to walk for 1 - 1/ 1/2 hours one way until you reach the end of the peninsula. There's no guarantee that the seals will be there each time. In my experience you get lucky about every third time. In my opinion it's still worth it as you will have an unforgettable experience once they are there. Just make sure not to go to close to the seals as especially the younger ones as easily scared.

Vombsjön

Latitud: 55.678375 | Longitud: 13.596734

One of the larger lakes in Skåne. It surrounded by forests for most of the part with the occasional beach. Finding a photography place could be challenging, but that makes it even more fun. The waste open water combined with clouds or a glowing sunset makes it a special place for me to visit.

Häckebergasjön

A smaller lake than Vombsjön, but easier to photograph. You're able to walk around it, finding great vantage points in numerous places. I always visit in the autumn when the colors reflect against the water. Adding the small castle to your image gives it that little extra.

Dalby stenbrott

This quarry is extremely popular during the summer, but for the rest of the year you'll have to place to yourself. The place is very small with a limited number of places to photograph. I would recommend the small beach with rocks at the western part (close to the parking lot) as you can photograph the eastern side with its rocks and trees.

Torna Hällestad

The lord of the rings in Skåne. Well not quite, but the old trees here definitely would be a good fit in a fantasy movie. Try using finding different compositions to exaggerate the perspective. Maybe even with a wide angle lens ?

Skäralid

Latitud: 56.039957 | Longitud: 13.253272

Southern Sweden's most popular autumn photography destination. Make sure you get there early as the parking lot gets crowded very fast. There are a couple of view points located at higher terrain giving you a beautiful perspective of the forest with its small lake. Another great photography location is at the actual lake itself. The lake is located at the main park lot and visitor center. Make sure to explore the entire area, the river flooring through the valley offers so many possibilities. I often use a big stopper filter for those long exposure blurry milky photos. Even though most popular during autumn for photography it offers great photography all year around.

Beddingestrand

You really have to love the pier at this place. It's like they build it for us photographers ! By using a wide angle lens you get that feeling being drawn into the frame. Combining with an long exposure filters makes it a great place for simple abstract compositions. There are also other wooden leftovers from other piers in the area worth exploring.

Great places in Österlen for photography

Hi,

I've always stressed the importance of focusing on the local area for your landscape photography. Here you have the opportunity of constantly revisiting your favorite spots during the best light. It greatly improves your chances of catching beautiful images instead of only dreaming of those far away places. Besides to become an expert in your field takes a lot of practice and the easiest way to improve is by visiting places close to home.

Below you'll find a short guide to my favorite places to photograph in south eastern Sweden. The area, part of Skåne, is called Österlen and is a favorite location for many artist from all over Sweden. All places mentioned below are within 1 1/2 hour of travel by car from Malmö. Hopefully you'll find it inspiring and add it to your bucket list. For western part of Skåne click here

I'll describe the sights in the direction from north to south, but you are of course free to visit them from the opposite side as well. Most of the places here a connected, meaning you could technically walk on dedicated trails for most of the way in either northern or southern direction.

Below you'll find a summary map of all the destinations mentioned in this blog post.

You can also click the GPS coordinates next to each destination and it will open a separate google map page.

Brösarps backar

Latitud: 55.715218 | Longitud: 14.111767

Best described as a miniature of Tuscany. Small hills with dotted trees and in the summer grassing cows. There are well defined walking trails and on top of some hills you will be able to see the Baltic Sea in the far distance. Great place for photography of both the wider landscape, but also possibilities for close up portraits of individual trees. If you will manage to come here as the fog or stormy weather rolls in it will add another element to your images.

Haväng / Ravlunda

Latitud: 55.723841 | Longitud: 14.191021

A very popular tourist area with a well run hostel called Skeppargården. The Verkeån river exits here in the Baltic ocean and a lot of people visit during the summer for recreation. The beaches are some of the nicest in Skåne. Close by there are also vast areas for walking and exploring, both at the beach but also further inland where you can walk the fields of Ravlunda for miles. Just make sure you check the billboards informing about the drills at Ravlunda as this is a military area.

Vitemölla

Latitud: 55.700003 | Longitud: 14.204491

What an amazing beach this place has. Soft sand and the Baltic Sea stretches as far as the eye can see. A lovely place to relax and recharge your batteries. You can walk along the beach from Haväng with great variation where sand, grass dunes and pine forest interlaps as you get closer to Vitemölla

Stenshuvud

Latitud: 55.656184 | Longitud: 14.268711

Stenshuvud is 1 out of 29 national parks in Sweden. It's mainly a deciduous forest with a large selection of walking trails. There's a large visitors center where you can learn about the history and geology of the area. There's a beautiful beach with impressive rock formations. The possibilities for compositions is endless with all those rocks and the waves crashing into the shoreline. Just be careful walking here as it can get slippery especially when photographing closer to the sea. You also have to possibility of going to the top of the mountain for excellent views. The distance is about 1 km.

Sträntemölla / Rörum

Latitud: 55.618178 | Longitud: 14.239142

In my opinion a hidden gem. You will find a small parking lot on the road from Rörum to Östra Vemmerlöv. Just follow the trail uphill through the forrest and you will get to a small house that used to be a mill. The creek with its waterfall creates a magical atmosphere. You can  continue to the right and reach a meadow with threes and sheeps and the lonely tree upon a hill overlooking Rörum and the countryside.

Vårhallarna: Latitud: 55.577713 | Longitud: 14.336794

The walking trail between the fishing villages of Vik and Baskemölla has to be one of the most beautiful ones in Skåne. Right at Vik you have the possibility of experiencing a landscape from a time when the area had a tropical climat. The black lava stones at the beach gives it a surreal experience. Make sure you check out the "priest bathtub ". Most probably a legend, still an impressive formation of lava rocks

About 15 minutes outside  Baskemölla on the road towards Simrishamn is a rocky section of the beach where you find opportunities to photograph the sea with Stenshuvud in the background.

Once at Vårhallarna there are more volcanic rock formations to photograph. Don't forget that also the intimate landscape where you focus on single rock(s) that can create compelling images. Such possibilities are endless here. I've been coming here for the last 10 years and still manage to find something new each time.

GislövsHammar

Located to the south from Simrishamn this small village with its limestone rocks offer great opportunities for some stunning photography. The rocks going of into the distance creates great leading lines where your wide angle lens gets put to work. Many great photos are just waiting to be taken here showing yet another of the many coastal areas of Österlen.

Löderup strandbad

Latitud: 55.385763 | Longitud: 14.11046

Here you will be able to combine photography at the beach with some panoramic viewpoints as well. The area suffers from earth erosion meaning that each year the Baltic Sea takes away a couple of meters of beach sand. In fact this is a problem for the whole coastline in Österlen. However here you will see examples of how efforts a being made to stop it by constructing ramparts and piers from stones. You can incorporate these elements in your photography and a mere 5 minute walk up the hills can provide gourgeous views.

This place let's you combine beach , open fields and forest photography. The white sand dunes looks amazing contrasting with the soft warm light. During autumn and winter you're often here alone, having the whole place to yourself for exploration. Well worth a visit.
